Cataract Surgery Turkey Cost: Prices per Eye in Istanbul vs the UK and US
The cataract surgery Turkey cost, explained in full: our prices per eye for a standard or premium lens, exactly what the price includes and what costs extra, and how the total compares with typical private prices in the UK, the US, Germany and the Gulf. Your own price is confirmed in writing by your surgeon before you pay anything.

Cataract surgery in Turkey typically costs about $1,100–2,700 per eye with a standard monofocal lens, compared with £2,500–£3,497 per eye in UK private clinics and $3,500–7,000 in the US. At Laser Istanbul Clinic, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı, Doç. Dr. Muhammet Derda Özer or Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram operates from {{£ cataract package price}} per eye, including scans, surgery, the lens, medication, check-ups and an interpreter. Hotel, transfers and flights are extra.
Cataract surgery Turkey cost at a glance: our prices per eye
These are our starting prices per eye, in pounds. Use the currency switcher to see them in euros, US dollars or Saudi riyals. The lens you choose makes the biggest difference to the price, and your surgeon recommends a lens only after measuring your eyes, never on price alone.
| Cataract surgery (per eye) | What you can expect afterwards | Time in Istanbul | Our price from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard monofocal lens | Sharp vision at one distance, usually far; reading glasses for close work | 5–7 days | {{£ cataract package price}} |
| Monofocal, monovision (one eye set for distance, one for near) | Fewer glasses for some tasks; not everyone adapts | 5–7 days | {{£ cataract package price}} |
| Toric lens (corrects astigmatism) | Clearer uncorrected vision if you have astigmatism | 5–7 days | {{£ premium lens price}} |
| EDOF lens (extended depth of focus) | Distance and middle distance (screen, dashboard); often light readers for small print | 5–7 days | {{£ premium lens price}} |
| Trifocal / multifocal lens | Near, middle and far; many people manage without glasses for most tasks, with more chance of glare and halos at night | 5–7 days | {{£ premium lens price}} |
Prices are per eye and include everything listed under "What your price includes" below. Both eyes: {{both-eyes price policy, e.g. twice the per-eye price or a combined price}}. All three of our surgeons perform cataract surgery. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı sees most patients choosing a premium (toric, EDOF or trifocal) lens. Doç. Dr. Muhammet Derda Özer ("Doç." is the Turkish title for Associate Professor) plans cataract surgery in eyes with corneal disease, keratoconus, retinal problems or past inflammation. Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram treats cataract alongside retinal conditions such as diabetic eye disease, and patients who prefer a female surgeon can choose her. What decides the cost of cataract eye surgery?
If you have cataracts, surgery cost depends on four things. First, the lens: a standard monofocal lens costs least; toric, EDOF and trifocal lenses cost more because the lenses themselves cost more and need extra measurements and planning. Second, one eye or both: cataract surgery is priced per eye, and many people need both eyes done, sometimes on the same trip. Third, your eyes: a cataract in an eye that also has corneal disease, glaucoma or a retinal problem can need extra tests, a different lens or closer follow-up. Fourth, what the price covers: a low headline price that leaves out scans, check-ups or medication is not cheaper in the end. UK price-comparison data specifically warns that some clinics leave aftercare and follow-up appointments out of the headline price. That is why we give one written price per eye, with every inclusion spelled out.
Laser-assisted cataract surgery. Some clinics charge extra for femtosecond laser-assisted surgery (FLACS). The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) wrote in June 2026 that studies have found neither fewer complications nor better outcomes with laser-assisted surgery compared with standard phacoemulsification, and that the result depends largely on the surgeon's skill and experience. Our standard operation is phacoemulsification; FLACS: {{£ FLACS supplement, or "not offered"}}.
What your cataract surgery price includes, and what costs extra
Included in your treatment price

- Cataract surgery by your named surgeon, with the lens type agreed in your quote ({{lens brands and models offered}})
- Medication and eye drops for your recovery
- Follow-up examinations in Istanbul with the same surgeon before you fly home
- A personal interpreter at every appointment
- A dedicated coordinator who organises your appointments, reports and paperwork
- Remote follow-up after you return home, with video reviews by your surgeon at agreed intervals
- Your full surgical report in English, including the exact lens model and power, to give to your optometrist or GP
Optional, at extra cost (arranged on request)
- Hotel: {{nights: cataract}} nights at {{hotel standard}}, from {{hotel price}}. You are free to book your own.
- Airport transfers: from {{transfer price}}.
- Extra nights if both eyes are treated in one trip or your surgeon advises a longer stay.
Not included
- Flights to and from Istanbul
- Travel insurance (see the FAQ below)
- New glasses after surgery: your prescription often changes, and you get it tested once the eye has settled, usually within about three months
- Anything not written in your quote. If your case needs something extra, it appears in your written quote before you pay a deposit.
A later cost to ask about anywhere: YAG laser
Months or years after cataract surgery, some people notice their vision becoming cloudy again. This is not the cataract returning: the thin capsule behind the new lens has turned hazy (posterior capsule opacification, PCO). In a UK study of 20,763 eyes, between 5.8% and 19.3% needed YAG laser treatment within five years, depending on the lens model. The treatment is quick and done as an outpatient, but ask any clinic whether it is included. Our policy: {{YAG laser / PCO treatment policy and the period it covers}}. How much is cataract surgery in Turkey compared with home?
At a glance: typical published prices in USD (2025–26)
How much cataract surgery costs depends mostly on where you live and which lens you choose. The table below shows the typical cataracts surgery price per eye, and for trifocal lens surgery on both eyes, in each market, so you can see how much a cataract operation costs at home before you compare it with Istanbul.
| Procedure | Istanbul (market) | UK private | USA | Germany | UAE / Saudi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cataract surgery, monofocal lens (per eye) | $1,100–2,700 | $3,350–4,700 | $3,500–7,000 | covered by statutory insurance; premium lens extra | $2,860–3,130 (UAE) |
| Trifocal lens surgery (both eyes) | $3,400–7,000 | $8,000–14,700 | $11,000–15,000 | $6,700–10,400 | about $8,000–8,700 |
Typical advertised ranges from our 2025–26 market research, not quotes. Trifocal figures are published prices for trifocal lens replacement, the same operation with the same lens. Comparing the middle of each range, monofocal cataract surgery in Istanbul costs roughly half the UK private price and about two-thirds less than in the US. Many advertised Istanbul prices are bundles that already include a hotel and transfers. Ours do not, so you can compare the treatment cost like for like and choose your own hotel.

Cataract surgery cost in the UK: private prices vs Istanbul (GBP)
On the NHS, cataract surgery is free at the point of use, but you may wait, and you get a standard lens. At the end of July 2026, 620,931 people in England were waiting to start NHS eye (ophthalmology) treatment, and only 72.9% had waited less than 18 weeks, against an NHS standard of 92% (NHS England). Cataract surgery is the largest part of that list. NICE also advises the NHS not to offer multifocal lenses for cataract surgery, so a UK patient who wants one usually pays for the whole operation privately.
So how much for cataract surgery in the UK if you go private, and what is the cataract private cost per eye? Typical published 2026 prices across six large UK private providers are:
| Cataract operation, private cost (per eye) | UK private price | Istanbul with us |
|---|---|---|
| Monofocal (standard) lens | £2,500–£3,497 | from {{£ cataract package price}} |
| Premium lens (toric, multifocal or trifocal) | £3,450–£4,988 | from {{£ premium lens price}} |
| Both eyes, monofocal | about £5,000–£6,994 | {{both-eyes price policy}} |
UK figures: Laser Eye Surgery Hub price comparison, updated March 2026. Both-eye figures are the per-eye range doubled. Most UK private clinics also offer finance over 10–60 months, with deposits from £500 up to 20% of the treatment cost. Before comparing, ask whether a UK quote includes aftercare and follow-up appointments.
Ireland. Our market research found public cataract waits of 12–24 months in Ireland, and many Irish patients already travel abroad for treatment. Irish patients see prices in euros through the currency switcher: from {{€ cataract package price}} per eye.
If you live in Germany or elsewhere in the EU (EUR)
German statutory health insurance (GKV) pays for standard cataract surgery with a monofocal lens; a premium lens is a private extra. So for German patients the question is not the cost of the operation itself but the cost of the lens upgrade and the surgeon. Typical published German prices for trifocal lens surgery are about $6,700–10,400 for both eyes. Our EUR prices: monofocal from {{€ cataract package price}} per eye, premium lens from {{€ premium lens price}} per eye.
If you live in the USA or Canada (USD)
Typical published US prices for cataract surgery without insurance are $3,500–7,000 per eye. If you are on Medicare, Part B may cover cataract surgery with a conventional intraocular lens. After the 2026 Part B deductible of $283, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for the surgeon and the facility, and Medicare covers one pair of glasses with standard frames (or one set of contact lenses) after each operation that implants a lens (Medicare.gov). Medicare's coverage refers to conventional lenses, so ask your surgeon what a premium-lens upgrade would cost you at home. In Canada, our research found a median wait for ophthalmology of 31.8 weeks. Our USD prices: monofocal from {{$ cataract package price}} per eye, premium lens from {{$ premium lens price}} per eye.
If you live in Saudi Arabia or the Gulf (SAR)
The Saudi riyal is pegged at SAR 3.75 to the US dollar, so the published UAE price for monofocal cataract surgery equals roughly SAR 10,725–11,740 per eye, and trifocal lens surgery in the Gulf about SAR 30,000–32,600 for both eyes. Gulf patients most often travel to Istanbul for premium lenses and for cataract surgery combined with cornea or retina care. Our SAR prices: monofocal from {{SAR cataract package price}} per eye, premium lens from {{SAR premium lens price}} per eye.
Why cataract surgery is cheaper in Turkey
- Lower running costs, the same operation. Cataract surgery in Istanbul is the same phacoemulsification operation used worldwide, with the same types of lens implant. The difference is the overall cost of healthcare in Turkey, not the method.
- Bundled versus itemised pricing. Some prices include scans, follow-up, medication, a hotel or YAG laser; others charge for each. Always compare what is actually in the price.
- Per-eye versus both-eye quotes. Cataract prices are usually per eye in the UK, the US and Istanbul. Check how a both-eyes quote is calculated.
- Exchange rates. If you pay in pounds, euros or dollars, currency movements change the real cost. Your quote states the currency you pay in: {{quote currency}}.
A lower price only makes sense when the essentials are the same: a surgeon you can name and check, full pre-operative measurements, a properly equipped operating theatre and a clear aftercare plan. Your surgery takes place in a fully equipped, Ministry of Health–licensed operating theatre in Istanbul, and you know your surgeon's name before you book.

Cataract surgery cost: frequently asked questions
Typical published prices for cataract surgery in Istanbul are about $1,100–2,700 per eye with a standard monofocal lens, and about $3,400–7,000 for trifocal lens surgery on both eyes. At Laser Istanbul Clinic, cataract surgery starts from {{£ cataract package price}} per eye with a monofocal lens and {{£ premium lens price}} per eye with a premium lens. That includes your examination, surgery, medication, check-ups and interpreter; hotel, transfers and flights are extra.
Typical published 2026 UK private prices are £2,500–£3,497 per eye with a standard monofocal lens and £3,450–£4,988 per eye with a premium lens such as a toric or multifocal lens. For both eyes, double the per-eye figure. On the NHS, cataract surgery is free, but waits vary and you receive a standard lens.
Typical published US prices without insurance are $3,500–7,000 per eye. With Medicare Part B, surgery with a conventional lens may be covered: in 2026 you pay the $283 Part B deductible and then 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Premium lenses usually mean an extra charge, so ask your surgeon for the full figure.
Our prices are per eye, as most cataract prices are in the UK, the US and Turkey. If both eyes need surgery, your surgeon tells you whether they can be done in the same trip, and your quote shows the total: {{both-eyes price policy}}.
In UK private clinics, typical published prices are about £3,450–£4,988 per eye for a premium lens, against £2,500–£3,497 for a standard one. With us, a toric, EDOF or trifocal lens is from {{£ premium lens price}} per eye. A Cochrane review found multifocal lenses reduce the need for glasses but cause more glare and halos, so your surgeon checks whether your eyes suit one before you pay.
Mainly because healthcare costs less to run in Turkey, not because the operation or the lenses are different. Differences in what is bundled into each price, and exchange rates, explain the rest of the gap. Always compare the written inclusions, not just the headline figure.
No. Hotel and airport transfers are a separate charge, and flights are not included. We are happy to book a hotel ({{nights: cataract}} nights, from {{hotel price}}) and transfers ({{transfer price}}) for you if you ask, or you can arrange your own.
Only if your examination shows that a different lens or approach suits your eyes better, and you agree to it before surgery. Your surgeon explains why, and any new price is confirmed in writing before treatment. If surgery is not right for you, you won't pay for an operation you don't need.
NHS cataract surgery is free in the UK, but you pay yourself if you choose surgery privately, at home or abroad. German statutory insurance pays for standard cataract surgery at home but not for premium lenses. US Medicare and private policies have their own rules, so check your plan before you book.
Some people need a quick YAG laser treatment months or years later for clouding behind the new lens; a large UK study found 5.8–19.3% of eyes needed it within five years. Our policy: {{YAG laser / PCO treatment policy and the period it covers}}. Ask any clinic this before you compare prices.
Yes, and tell your insurer you are travelling for treatment. The NHS advises making sure you have appropriate travel insurance and telling your insurer about planned treatment abroad, because standard policies may not cover it.
