This free online eye test checks how sharply each of your eyes sees at a distance, using a tumbling-E chart sized to your own screen. You need about three metres of space, a bank-card-sized card to set the scale, and a few minutes. You get a score in 6/6, 20/20 and decimal form. It is a screening check, not an eye examination.

Step 1 of 10: Start

Check each eye's distance vision in a few minutes

This test measures how sharply each eye sees at a distance, using a tumbling-E chart sized to your own screen. The chart itself is visual by nature; every instruction is readable by a screen reader.

What you need

  • About 3 metres (10 feet) of space in front of your screen
  • A card the size of a bank card, to set the scale
  • A helper or a wireless keyboard, if possible
  • Screen brightness up, a well-lit room, and your distance glasses or contact lenses on

This online eye test is a screening tool only. It does not diagnose any eye condition, it cannot check the health of your eyes, and it does not replace an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Results depend on your screen, lighting and distance and may not be accurate. If you have any concern about your eyes, or any sudden change in your vision, see an eye doctor.

Do you have any of these right now?

  • Sudden loss or blurring of vision
  • A dark curtain or shadow across your vision
  • New or sudden increase in floaters or flashes of light
  • Sudden double vision
  • A painful red eye
  • An eye injury

Please don't take this test now

Sudden changes in vision, a curtain or shadow over your vision, new flashes or floaters, sudden double vision or a painful red eye need urgent medical attention. Call your local emergency number (112 in the EU and Türkiye, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US and Canada) or go to the nearest emergency department.

Match the outline to your card

Hold your card flat against the screen, in the top-left corner of the outline, and adjust until the outline matches its edges exactly. Use the back of the card; we never see or record it. Any bank card, driving licence or ID card works.

Choose your distance

Measure from the screen to your eyes with a tape measure, put a chair or mark on the floor there, and sit or stand with your eyes level with the middle of the screen.

Are you wearing glasses or contact lenses for distance?

Thinking about laser eye surgery? After the main test you can run it again without your glasses, because your unaided vision is the starting point your surgeon will want to know.

How will you answer?

Next, two large practice letters to learn the controls. They are not scored.

Cover your LEFT eye with your palm. Don't press on the eye. Keep both eyes open behind your hand.

Now the left eye

Cover your RIGHT eye with your palm. Don't press on the eye. Keep both eyes open behind your hand.

How to read your result

This online eye test is a screening tool only. It does not diagnose any eye condition, it cannot check the health of your eyes, and it does not replace an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Results depend on your screen, lighting and distance and may not be accurate. If you have any concern about your eyes, or any sudden change in your vision, see an eye doctor.

What your online eye test result means

Your result is a fraction. The first number is the testing distance; the second is the distance at which a person with typical sight reads the same letters. 20/20 vision (in feet) means you see at 20 feet what an average person sees at 20 feet. In metres, the same standard is 6/6; in decimal form it is 1.0. 20/20 and 6/6 are the same result. A bigger second number means weaker distance vision: with 20/40 (6/12), you need to stand at 20 feet to read what a typical eye reads from 40 feet.

Your resultSame result in feetDecimalWhat it usually means
6/4.820/161.25Sharper than average
6/620/201.0Normal distance vision
6/7.5–6/9.520/25–20/320.8–0.63Slightly below normal; often a small prescription
6/1220/400.5UK minimum for driving (both eyes together)
6/15–6/4820/50–20/1600.4–0.13Clearly reduced; book an eye examination
6/60 or worse20/200 or worse0.1 or lessLarge reduction; see an eye doctor promptly

Is 20/20 perfect vision? No. It is normal sharpness at a distance and says nothing about near vision, colour vision, side vision or eye health. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, only about 35% of adults have 20/20 vision without glasses or contact lenses, and about 75% with them.

Three things to know about your result

Why we test one eye at a time

With both eyes open, the stronger eye can make up for the weaker one, so you may not notice a difference. That is why eye clinics test each eye separately. If one eye scores two or more lines lower, the cause can be a different prescription in each eye, a lazy eye (amblyopia), a cataract or another condition. A lazy eye often causes no symptoms and is usually first found at an eye test.

With or without glasses?

Test with the glasses or contact lenses you wear for distance to see how well you see day to day. Thinking about laser eye surgery? Try it once without them too: your unaided vision is the starting point your surgeon will want to know.

UK driving and the number plate check

In the UK, drivers must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres and have a visual acuity of at least 6/12 (decimal 0.5) using both eyes together, with glasses or contacts if needed, plus an adequate field of vision. No website can do the number plate check for you. If this test gives you 6/12 or lower, have your eyes examined before you next drive.

When to see an eye doctor

Get urgent help today, whatever your test result, if you notice

  • sudden loss of vision or sudden blurred vision
  • a dark curtain or shadow moving across your vision
  • floaters that suddenly appear or increase, or new flashes of light
  • double vision that starts suddenly, or after a head injury
  • double vision with a severe headache, or eye pain with double vision

Call your local emergency number (112 in the EU and Türkiye, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US and Canada) or go to the nearest emergency department. Sudden trouble seeing can also be a sign of stroke.

Book a routine eye examination

If your result is below 6/6 (20/20) in either eye, if one eye scores clearly lower, or if your vision has changed. In the UK, eligible people can have a free NHS sight test every 2 years. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a full eye examination every 5 to 10 years even for healthy adults aged 18 to 39.

A good score is not a clean bill of health

Online tests cannot detect eye diseases with hidden symptoms. If you have diabetes or a family history of glaucoma, see an eye doctor regularly, whatever your result.

This online eye test is a screening tool only. It does not diagnose any eye condition, cannot check the health of your eyes and does not replace an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Your result depends on your screen, lighting and distance, and may not be accurate. If you are worried about your eyes, or your vision changes suddenly, see an eye doctor.

What next?

Can your result show whether you can have laser eye surgery?

No. Your score shows how well you see, not why. Whether a treatment suits you depends on measurements of your cornea, lens and retina, taken by your surgeon at a full examination in Istanbul.

Send your result to a surgeon. Go to our free online consultation and upload your prescription or eye reports. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı, Doç. Dr. Muhammet Derda Özer or Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram will tell you which treatments may suit you. Online eye test: frequently asked questions

An online eye test gives a reasonable estimate of your distance vision if you calibrate your screen and use the right distance, but it is less accurate than a test by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says home tests suit healthy adults aged 18 to 39 with a mild or moderate prescription and no eye symptoms, and can't detect hidden eye disease.

Yes, but a laptop or desktop screen is better: at 3 metres the 6/6 letter is only about 4 mm tall. Calibrate the screen with a card first and ask someone to help.

No. It can show that one eye sees less sharply, a possible sign of a lazy eye, but only an eye examination can diagnose it. It does not test for double vision; sudden double vision needs urgent medical help.
