Which Country Is Best for Laser Eye Surgery? Turkey vs UK, Germany and USA Costs Compared
Which country is best for laser eye surgery depends on two things: who operates on your eyes, and what you pay for the whole treatment, not just the headline price. This page compares typical 2026 prices in Turkey, the UK, Germany, the US and the Gulf, shows what is and isn't included, and explains the costs of getting laser eye surgery abroad that adverts leave out.

No single country is best for laser eye surgery. The best place is wherever an experienced, named surgeon measures your eyes properly and you have a clear aftercare plan. On price, Turkey is usually the cheapest of the countries compared here: typical advertised Istanbul prices for LASIK are about 64% lower than in the UK and 58% lower than in the US. At Laser Istanbul Clinic, laser surgery is performed by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı or Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram.
Which country is best for laser eye surgery? The honest answer
The country matters less than the surgeon, the tests and the aftercare. Laser eye surgery uses the same types of laser in London, Munich, New York and Istanbul. What changes the result is whether you were a suitable candidate, how carefully your corneas were measured, how experienced your surgeon is and how well you are looked after while your eyes heal.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth), the UK professional body for eye surgeons, reports that over 95% of laser vision correction patients are satisfied with the result. It also says up to 1 in 10 patients need some form of additional surgery to get the best result, and that permanent serious loss of vision is rare. Those figures apply wherever you have surgery, so a good choice is one where the follow-up and any re-treatment are clearly planned.
So the useful question is: which country gives you a surgeon you can check, full pre-operative tests and reliable aftercare, at a total cost you can afford? For many people in the UK, Ireland and the US, Turkey answers that well, because the price gap is large and Istanbul is easy to reach. For people in Germany or the Gulf, the gap for laser alone is smaller, and the case for travelling rests more on lens surgery, cornea treatment or access to a particular surgeon.
| What to compare | Why it matters more than the country |
|---|---|
| The named surgeon | Experience with your exact procedure decides much of the result |
| Pre-operative tests | Topography, corneal thickness and a full eye check decide which method is safe for you |
| What the price includes | Check-ups, medication, re-treatment and interpreter can add up |
| Aftercare at home | You need a plan for the weeks after you fly back |
| Total trip cost | Flights, hotel, time off and insurance, not just the surgery |
Laser eye surgery cost by country: Turkey vs UK, Germany, USA and the Gulf
Turkey has the lowest typical advertised laser prices of the countries in this comparison. The table shows typical published prices for both eyes in US dollars, so every country can be compared on the same basis.
| Laser method, both eyes (USD, 2025–26) | Istanbul (market) | UK | USA | Germany | UAE / Saudi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LASIK / Femto-LASIK | $1,450–2,700 | $4,000–7,500 | $4,000–6,000 | $2,800–5,300 | $1,600–3,800 |
| SMILE / SMILE Pro | $2,000–3,450 | $5,900–10,200 | $5,000–8,000 | $3,250–6,000 | $3,260–5,440 (UAE) |
Typical advertised ranges from our 2025–26 market research. Advertised Istanbul prices are often bundles that already include a hotel and transfers; our own prices do not, so you can compare the treatment cost like for like.
How much cheaper is Istanbul? Comparing the middle of each range:
| Istanbul compared with… | LASIK / Femto-LASIK | SMILE / SMILE Pro |
|---|---|---|
| UK | about 64% lower | about 66% lower |
| USA | about 58% lower | about 58% lower |
| Germany | about 49% lower | about 41% lower |
| UAE / Saudi | about 23% lower | about 37% lower (UAE) |
In pounds: laser eye surgery in Istanbul typically costs about £1,100–£2,700 for both eyes, depending on the method. A UK price-comparison survey of eight large UK providers in 2026 found standard LASIK or LASEK at £2,590–£3,990 for both eyes, SMILE at £5,000–£5,900 or more, and complex or high prescriptions at £3,990–£7,500. The same survey warns that headline "from" prices apply only to the simplest prescriptions, which it puts at fewer than a quarter of patients.
What is the cheapest country for laser eye surgery? Of the countries compared on this page, Turkey. Prices in some other destinations may be lower still, but we have not compared them here, and a lower price only helps if the surgeon, the tests and the aftercare are the same standard. The cheapest quote is often cheap because something has been left out.
Is laser eye surgery cheaper abroad once you add everything up?
Usually yes, for patients from the UK, Ireland and the US, but only if you compare the total cost. Three things make quotes look more different, or more similar, than they really are.
1. Per eye or both eyes. Many UK and German clinics quote per eye. One large German laser-centre group lists LASEK/PRK from €1,990, Femto-LASIK from €2,100 and SMILE pro from €2,575 per eye in 2026, so both eyes cost roughly twice that. Most Istanbul laser prices, including ours, are for both eyes.
2. What is inside the price. The RCOphth says a UK clinic's fee should be clear from the outset and normally includes follow-up visits and treatment for problems resulting from surgery, plus extra laser treatment to fine-tune the result for up to two years. The UK price survey lists the most common exclusions as enhancements ("top-ups"), extended aftercare, dry-eye treatment, extra medication and some tests. The German group above includes check-ups for six weeks and any re-treatment within five years. Ask every provider, at home or abroad, the same questions.
3. The travel. Flights, a hotel for several nights, transfers, time off work and travel insurance are real costs. They are covered in the worked example further down this page.
The honest verdict: if you live in the UK, Ireland or the US, the saving on laser surgery is usually large enough to cover the trip several times over. If you live in Germany, the saving is smaller and depends on your method and travel costs. If you live in the Gulf, laser alone is rarely worth travelling for; lens surgery, keratoconus treatment or retina care more often are.
Beyond laser: eye surgery cost comparison for lens, cataract, cornea, retina and eyelid surgery
The biggest savings are often not on laser at all, but on lens surgery and specialist operations. Typical published prices in USD:
| Treatment (USD, 2025–26) | Istanbul (market) | UK | USA | Germany | Istanbul vs UK / USA (midpoints) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trifocal lens replacement (RLE), both eyes | $3,400–7,000 | $8,000–14,700 | $11,000–15,000 | $6,700–10,400 | about 54% / 60% lower |
| Cataract surgery, monofocal lens, per eye | $1,100–2,700 | $3,350–4,700 | $3,500–7,000 | standard lens covered by statutory insurance | about 53% / 64% lower |
| ICL (implantable lens), per eye | $1,800–3,500 | $3,350–8,700 | $3,500–9,000 | from $2,900 | about 56% / 58% lower |
| Corneal cross-linking, per eye | $1,400–2,240 | $2,400–4,700 | $2,500–6,000 | n/a | about 49% / 57% lower |
| Corneal transplant, per eye | $4,000–7,000 | $8,000–14,000 | $13,000–28,000 | n/a | about 50% / 73% lower |
| Vitrectomy, per eye | $3,200–6,500 | $8,000–13,400 | $8,000–14,000 | n/a | about 55% / 56% lower |
| Eyelid surgery (upper + lower blepharoplasty) | $2,200–4,800 | $4,000–10,000 | $6,000–12,000 | n/a | about 50% / 61% lower |
Typical advertised ranges from our 2025–26 market research; n/a means no reliable published range was found. Savings compare the middle of each range.
Who operates. Lens replacement with a premium lens, ICL and eyelid surgery are led by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı. Cataract surgery is performed by all three surgeons: Prof. Dr. Satıcı, Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram and Doç. Dr. Muhammet Derda Özer ("Doç." is the Turkish title for Associate Professor). Keratoconus, cross-linking, corneal transplant and retina surgery are led by Doç. Dr. Özer.
Why lens surgery shows the biggest gap. In the UK, lens surgery to reduce the need for glasses is not usually offered on the NHS, and the RCOphth says refractive lens exchange is not covered by private health insurance either. In the US, the American Academy of Ophthalmology says Medicare and most insurers cover a standard monofocal lens, while premium lenses such as multifocal, EDOF and toric lenses are usually paid out of pocket and can cost more than a thousand dollars. So most people who want a premium lens pay the full private price at home.
Country by country: what you would pay at home
United Kingdom and Ireland
Laser eye surgery and lens surgery are not usually offered on the NHS, so almost everyone pays privately. The RCOphth adds that surgery to correct the need for glasses is not covered by private health insurance. Typical 2026 UK prices for laser on both eyes run from about £2,590 for standard LASIK to £7,500 for complex prescriptions.
Cataract surgery is available on the NHS, but waits are long: at the end of July 2026, 620,931 people in England were waiting for NHS eye treatment and only 72.9% had waited less than 18 weeks, against a 92% standard. NICE advises the NHS not to offer multifocal lenses in cataract surgery, so a premium lens means paying privately. In Ireland, our market research found cataract waits of 12–24 months.
Getting there: Istanbul is about 4 hours from London. UK and Irish passport holders can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, according to Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. GOV.UK says your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after you arrive.
Germany, Austria and Switzerland
German statutory health insurance (GKV) treats laser eye surgery as not medically necessary and does not pay for it; private insurance (PKV) depends on your policy. GKV covers cataract surgery with a standard lens, while a premium lens is paid privately. German laser prices are lower than in the UK, so for laser alone the saving is smaller (about 41–49% on midpoints). The larger savings for German patients are on trifocal lens replacement (about 39% lower than typical German prices) and on combining lens and eyelid surgery in one trip.
Getting there: about 3 hours from most German airports. German passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
United States and Canada
The US Refractive Surgery Council put the national average LASIK price at $4,492 for both eyes, about $2,250 per eye, in June 2026. It warns that adverts of $99–$299 per eye usually exclude consultations or check-ups, or apply only to simple prescriptions. Medicare Part B may cover cataract surgery with a conventional lens; after the deductible you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Premium lenses are usually out of pocket. The US shows the biggest gaps of all: about 73% on a corneal transplant and about 60% on trifocal lens replacement.
Getting there: flights from North America are long (10 hours or more), so plan a longer stay. US and Canadian passport holders can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Gulf
Laser prices in the Gulf are much closer to Istanbul prices (about 23% higher for LASIK on midpoints), so few Gulf patients travel for laser alone. They more often come for premium lens surgery (Gulf trifocal prices are about 38% above Istanbul), keratoconus treatment or retina care. A female surgeon, Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram, is available on request. The flight from the Gulf is about 4–5 hours.

What is the same, and what is different, in Turkey
The same: the types of laser and lens. Istanbul eye surgeons use the same laser platforms and lens brands found in London, Munich or Dubai, such as the Zeiss VisuMax for SMILE and femtosecond lasers for blade-free LASIK. Eye surgeons in Turkey complete several years of specialist ophthalmology training after medical school.
Different: the cost of running healthcare. Salaries, rent and overheads are lower in Turkey, which is the main reason the price is lower; the technology is not cheaper. Exchange rates matter too: if you pay in pounds, euros or dollars, currency movements change your real cost, so check which currency your quote is in ({{quote currency}}).
Also different: aftercare logistics. At home, your surgeon is a short drive away. Abroad, your follow-up after you fly home is mostly remote. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says you should see your doctor within 24 to 48 hours after LASIK and at regular intervals for at least the first six months. Make sure you know who will do those checks, where and at what cost.
Where your surgery takes place. With us, surgery happens in a fully equipped, Ministry of Health–licensed operating theatre in Istanbul, and you receive the address before you travel.
Getting laser eye surgery abroad: what the whole trip costs
Getting laser eye surgery abroad means budgeting for more than the operation. Plan 3–5 days in Istanbul for laser surgery and 5–7 days for lens replacement or cataract surgery, so your surgeon can check your eyes before you fly. A worked example for laser surgery on both eyes:
| Item | Cost | Who arranges it |
|---|---|---|
| Laser treatment, both eyes, with examination, scans, surgery, medication, check-ups in Istanbul, interpreter, coordinator and remote follow-up | from {{£ laser package price}} | Your surgeon and coordinator |
| Hotel, {{nights: laser}} nights (optional) | {{hotel price}} | We can book it, or you can |
| Airport transfers (optional) | {{transfer price}} | We can book them, or you can |
| Return flights | Your booking | You |
| Specialist travel insurance | Your policy | You |
| Time off work | Your 3–5 days in Istanbul plus travel days | You |
| Total trip cost | Treatment + your travel choices |
The NHS treatment-abroad checklist suggests building in a margin for exchange-rate changes, a possibly longer stay and the cost of any return trip. Compare this total, not the treatment price alone, with your best quote at home.
Who should travel for eye surgery, and who should stay at home?
| Travelling to Istanbul usually makes sense if… | Staying at home may be better if… |
|---|---|
| You live in the UK, Ireland or the US and are paying privately | Your home price is close to the Istanbul price (for example, laser in the Gulf) |
| You want a premium lens that your health system or insurer won't pay for | Your treatment is covered at home with an acceptable wait |
| You face a long wait and want a named surgeon now | You need many repeat visits, such as a long course of eye injections |
| You can stay the full recommended time and plan remote aftercare | You can't take a week off or can't fly at the recommended time |
| You want to combine treatments, such as lens and eyelid surgery, in one trip | You have complex eye disease best managed by one local team long term |
If your scans show you are not suitable for laser surgery, a responsible surgeon will tell you and suggest an alternative, such as an ICL or lens surgery, or no surgery at all.

Frequently asked questions
No single country is best. Choose the place where an experienced surgeon you can name assesses your eyes fully and you have a clear aftercare plan. On cost, Turkey is usually the cheapest of the UK, US, German, Gulf and Turkish prices compared on this page, with LASIK about 64% cheaper than the UK on typical advertised prices.
Of the countries we compared, Turkey has the lowest typical prices: about $1,450–2,700 for LASIK on both eyes in Istanbul, against $4,000–7,500 in the UK and $4,000–6,000 in the US. Cheaper offers exist elsewhere, but compare the surgeon, the tests and the aftercare before the price.
For UK, Irish and US patients, usually yes, even after flights and a hotel. For German patients the saving is smaller, and for Gulf patients laser alone is rarely much cheaper. Always compare the total trip cost and check whether quotes are per eye or for both eyes.
It can be, when an experienced ophthalmologist operates after full pre-operative tests, in a properly equipped operating theatre, with a plan for aftercare at home. The RCOphth reports that over 95% of laser patients are satisfied, and up to 1 in 10 need additional surgery, wherever they are treated. Plan who looks after you once you are home before you book.
A 2026 survey of eight large UK providers found standard LASIK or LASEK at £2,590–£3,990 for both eyes, SMILE at £5,000–£5,900 or more, and complex prescriptions at £3,990–£7,500. Many UK clinics quote per eye, so check the basis. The NHS does not usually offer laser eye surgery.
The US Refractive Surgery Council puts the national average at $4,492 for both eyes, about $2,250 per eye (June 2026). Very low adverts such as $299 per eye usually exclude consultations or check-ups, or apply only to simple prescriptions.
Usually not. The RCOphth says it is not available on the NHS and is not covered by UK private health insurance; German statutory insurance does not pay for it; US plans and FSA/HSA accounts vary. Check your own policy.
Mainly because healthcare costs less to run in Turkey, not because the equipment is different. Istanbul surgeons use the same laser platforms and lens brands as Western clinics. Differences in what is bundled into the price, and per-eye versus both-eye quotes, explain the rest of the gap.
UK, Irish, US, Canadian, Australian and German passport holders can visit Turkey without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days, according to Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check the current rules for your own passport before you book.
No. Your price includes the examination, scans, surgery, medication, check-ups in Istanbul, interpreter, coordinator and remote follow-up. Hotel and airport transfers are a separate charge, arranged on request, and flights are not included.
