Laser eye surgery in Turkey makes sense for patients from Sweden and Norway because, at home, operations to stop wearing glasses are self-pay: Sweden's 1177 states that you pay the whole cost yourself. In Istanbul, your laser, lens or cataract surgery is done by a named surgeon (Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı, Doç. Dr. Muhammet Derda Özer or Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram). Nordic passport holders need no visa for short stays.

What the public system in Sweden and Norway pays for

The Nordic public systems pay for eye surgery that treats disease, such as cataract surgery, but not for surgery whose purpose is to free you from glasses. That one distinction explains why most Scandinavian patients who travel for eye surgery do so.

Laser eye surgery and lens surgery for glasses are self-pay. Sweden's national health information service, 1177, describes the operations used to correct refractive errors (LASEK, LASIK, ReLEx SMILE, ICL lens implants and refractive lens exchange, RLE) and says plainly: you pay the whole cost of the operation yourself. Laser eye surgery and RLE in Sweden and Norway are carried out at private clinics, so the real comparison is not "public care or Istanbul". It is "a private clinic at home or a named surgeon in Istanbul": the same types of operation, the same types of lasers and lenses, a different price.

Who suits refractive surgery? According to 1177, you should be at least 20 years old, and your prescription should not have changed for two years. Laser treatment reshapes the cornea; RLE replaces your natural lens with an artificial one and is mostly considered from around the mid-40s, when reading glasses start to matter; ICL places a thin lens in front of your own lens and is an option for some people whose corneas aren't suited to laser. Your surgeon decides which, if any, suits your eyes after a full examination.

Cataract surgery waits in Norway and Sweden

Public cataract surgery in the Nordic countries is good care, and if your wait is short and a standard lens suits you, it may well be the right choice. The question for many people is how long they will wait and what lens they will get.

Norway. The Norwegian Directorate of Health (Helsedirektoratet) sets guideline deadlines for starting specialist care. For cataract where the vision in your better eye is better than 0.5, the guideline deadline is 78 weeks; where it is worse than 0.5, it is 12 weeks (priority guidance, updated 19 June 2024). In other words, if your better eye still sees reasonably well, the system allows a wait of up to a year and a half. Helsenorge also notes that waiting times vary between hospitals, so it is worth comparing.

Sweden. The national care guarantee (vårdgaranti) says you should be offered treatment within 90 days of the decision to treat you, after a specialist appointment that should also come within 90 days, according to 1177. The guarantee applies within your own region, and waits differ between regions and clinics.

What lens will you get? Helsenorge notes that after cataract surgery many people will still need glasses for some distances, and advises talking to your eye doctor about the vision you want afterwards. If you want a multifocal or trifocal lens to reduce your need for glasses, ask your public clinic whether it is offered and what it would cost; refractive lens exchange for that purpose sits on 1177's self-pay list.

Who travels for cataract surgery abroad? Mostly people who:

  • have a long wait because their better eye is still above the priority threshold, but are struggling to drive at night, read or work
  • want a premium lens to reduce their dependence on glasses
  • want both eyes treated in one planned trip

For context: published Istanbul price lists in 2025–26 typically show about US$1,450–2,700 for Femto-LASIK on both eyes, US$2,000–3,450 for SMILE / SMILE Pro, US$3,400–7,000 for trifocal lens replacement on both eyes and US$1,100–2,700 per eye for monofocal cataract surgery; many of these are packages that bundle the hotel. Your own price is set by your surgeon after reviewing your eyes and is confirmed in writing, in your currency, before you pay a deposit. To compare fairly, ask your local private clinic for a written quote for the same procedure and lens.

Your treatment price includes: your full pre-operative examination and scans, surgery by your named surgeon, medication and eye drops, follow-up checks in Istanbul with the same surgeon, a personal interpreter, a dedicated coordinator, and remote follow-up once you're home.

Not included: flights, hotel and airport transfers. Hotel and transfers are a separate charge; we can book them for you on request. Budget for these, for time off work and for travel insurance (see below) when you compare with a quote at home.

Your surgeon: who will operate on you

When you have laser eye surgery in Turkey, the surgeon matters more than the city. You'll know who will examine you, operate and check your recovery before you book:

  • Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı: cataract and premium lens surgery (RLE, trifocal lenses), laser eye surgery (LASIK, SMILE Pro, PRK), ICL, eyelid surgery, squint and glaucoma. An ophthalmology specialist since 1992, former Professor and Head of Ophthalmology at Harran University, with 21 peer-reviewed papers on PubMed.
  • Doç. Dr. Muhammet Derda Özer ("Doç." is the Turkish title for Associate Professor): cornea, keratoconus, cross-linking, corneal transplant, retina and cataract. Trained at Istanbul University's Faculty of Medicine, Associate Professor since 2021, FICO-qualified, with 27 papers on PubMed. Speaks English.
  • Op. Dr. Aysan Bayram: cataract surgery, laser eye surgery and retinal disease. An ophthalmology specialist since 1999, trained at Trakya and Yüzüncü Yıl universities. Speaks English. If you would prefer a female surgeon, she can be your surgeon.

Surgery takes place in a fully equipped, Ministry of Health–licensed operating theatre in Istanbul.

Keratoconus. Some younger patients learn at a laser consultation that their cornea is too thin or irregular for laser surgery because of keratoconus. Doç. Dr. Özer assesses these patients. Corneal cross-linking aims to stop keratoconus getting worse, so an early assessment is worth it.

Direct flights from Scandinavia and Finland to Istanbul

Istanbul has two international airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. Check which one your flight uses before you book a hotel, because they are on opposite sides of the city.

{{flight info: flight times from each airport, any routes from Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, Malmö/Billund or other regional airports, and seasonal services, checked on the airlines' own sites before publishing}}

Flights are not included in your treatment price. Book them once your surgeon has confirmed your dates, and choose a flexible return fare if you can, in case your surgeon wants one more check before you fly. If you'd like to travel during a holiday week, ask for dates early.

How long to stay. Plan for 3–5 days for laser eye surgery and 5–7 days for lens replacement or cataract surgery, including your examination, surgery and check-ups. Most patients can fly 1–3 days after laser surgery and about 3–7 days after lens or cataract surgery, once their surgeon has checked the eye. After some retina operations that use a gas bubble, flying isn't safe for several weeks; your surgeon will plan your dates around this.

Time off work. 1177 notes that after LASIK or SMILE most people don't need sick leave but should rest for a few days, while after surface laser (LASEK) many people take one to three days off. You should not drive straight after any of these operations.

Do you need a visa for Turkey with a Nordic passport?

No, not for a short stay. According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (checked 6 October 2026):

  • Sweden, Norway and Finland: ordinary passport holders can visit Türkiye without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Denmark: ordinary passport holders are exempt from a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the end of your stay.
  • Travel with a passport. Norway's former arrangement allowing tourists to use a national ID card with a chip ended on 31 December 2022, so bring your passport.

Rules can change. Check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and your own foreign ministry's travel advice for Türkiye before you book and again before you travel.

Health cover. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK, not in Turkey, and the European Commission states that it does not cover costs when you travel for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment. 1177 adds that you usually pay yourself for planned care in a country outside the Nordic countries, the EU, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Look for travel insurance that covers treatment abroad and possible complications, and tell your insurer about your plans.

An interpreter at every appointment

You won't need a word of Turkish. A personal interpreter joins your examination, your consent discussion, your surgery day and your check-ups, so nothing is lost between you and your surgeon. Doç. Dr. Özer and Op. Dr. Bayram both speak English, and the interpreter is there anyway, because medical conversations are easier with someone whose only job is to make sure you've understood. {{Scandinavian language support: whether a Swedish-, Norwegian- or Danish-speaking interpreter or coordinator can be arranged, and with how much notice}}

Your coordinator handles appointments, documents and questions before and after your trip, by WhatsApp, phone or email. Your surgical report, lens details and medication plan are given to you in English, ready for your optician or eye doctor at home.

Is laser eye surgery in Turkey safe? Risks and aftercare at home

Laser eye surgery in Turkey carries the same risks as laser eye surgery in Stockholm or Oslo; what changes is how your aftercare is organised. 1177 lists the main risks of refractive surgery as infection, glare and halos around lights, corneal haze, the need for a second treatment and, rarely, a weakening and bulging of the cornea (ectasia). Your surgeon explains your own risks at the consent discussion, and no surgeon can guarantee a result.

Before you leave Istanbul. Your surgeon examines you again and only signs you off to fly when your eye is ready. You go home with your full surgical report in English, the exact lens model and power (for lens and cataract surgery), your drop schedule and direct contact details for your coordinator.

Once you're home. Your coordinator stays in touch, and your surgeon reviews your recovery by video at agreed intervals. If you need to be seen in person, we help you arrange it with a local optician or ophthalmologist and share your full records with them. {{complication policy: who pays for an in-person review at home or further treatment, and whether re-treatment in Istanbul and the travel for it are covered}}

Tell your optician. After laser eye surgery, remind your optician or doctor that you've had it whenever your eye pressure is checked for glaucoma, because laser surgery can make pressure readings read low. If you ever need cataract surgery later, tell the surgeon and bring your old prescriptions; it helps them choose the right lens power.

Know the warning signs. Helsenorge advises contacting an eye doctor straight away if you have severe pain, marked redness or a sudden drop in vision after cataract surgery. After cataract or lens surgery, a sudden shadow in part of your vision, flashing lights or a shower of new floaters can mean a retinal detachment and needs urgent attention: go to your nearest emergency eye service, then let us know.

What Scandinavian patients say

Questions Scandinavian patients ask

No. 1177, Sweden's national health information service, states that you pay the whole cost of an operation for refractive errors yourself. That covers laser eye surgery (LASEK, LASIK, SMILE), ICL and refractive lens exchange. The same operations in Norway are also done at private clinics.

It depends on your vision and your hospital. Helsedirektoratet's guideline deadline is 12 weeks if the vision in your better eye is worse than 0.5, and 78 weeks if it is better than 0.5. Waiting times also vary between hospitals, so ask yours for an expected date.

Under the vårdgaranti, you should get a specialist appointment within 90 days and treatment within 90 days of the decision to treat you, according to 1177. It applies within your own region. If you want surgery the guarantee doesn't cover, such as laser eye surgery, you pay privately at home or abroad.

With Laser Istanbul Clinic, Femto-LASIK on both eyes starts from {{SEK price}} or {{NOK price}}, including your examination, surgery, medication, check-ups and interpreter. Hotel, airport transfers and flights are extra. Your surgeon confirms your exact price in writing after reviewing your eyes.

The risks are the same as anywhere: infection, glare and halos, haze, a possible second treatment and, rarely, corneal ectasia. What matters is a thorough examination, an experienced surgeon and a clear aftercare plan. You'll know your surgeon's name, training and specialties before you book, and you go home with a full report in English.

No, not for a short visit. Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish ordinary passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa, and Danish passport holders up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond your stay. Check the rules before you travel, as they can change.

No. The EHIC is not valid in Turkey, and it never covers trips made to obtain medical treatment. Take out travel insurance that covers treatment abroad and possible complications.

In 2026, there are direct flights from Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg, Oslo Gardermoen, Copenhagen and Helsinki, with Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet or Norwegian depending on the route. Check whether your flight lands at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen before booking your hotel.

Contact your coordinator straight away; your surgeon reviews your eye by video and, if you need to be seen in person, we help you arrange it locally and send your records. For an emergency, go to your nearest emergency eye service first. {{complication policy}}

Often, yes. Laser eye surgery is usually done on both eyes on the same day. For lens and cataract surgery, your surgeon will tell you after examining you whether both eyes can be treated during one stay and how many days to allow.
