Whether you have it in London, Frankfurt, Singapore or Istanbul, the same few laser techniques are used (LASIK, SMILE and surface laser such as PRK) and the same biology decides how your eyes heal. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the levels of risk and benefit “vary from surgeon to surgeon depending on their level of experience”, which is the clearest published statement of what actually separates one clinic from another.

Outcomes for well-selected patients are good wherever the technique is done well. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reports that about 9 in 10 people who have LASIK end up with vision between 20/20 and 20/40 without glasses or contact lenses, and it cites a 2016 study in which 99.5% of eyes saw 20/40 or better afterwards. EyeWiki, the AAO’s clinical encyclopedia, puts dissatisfaction with vision at 1–4% and reports an overall adverse-event rate of 1.3% of eyes, with serious events in 0.4%. Those are averages from published studies. They do not rank countries, and we found no authoritative study that does.

That is why league tables of countries should make you cautious. People with unstable prescriptions, very high prescriptions, severe dry eye, thin corneas, keratoconus, advanced glaucoma, cataracts or uncontrolled diabetes are not suitable candidates.

The risks apply in every country. The FDA lists loss of lines of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses, glare, halos or double vision that can affect night driving, and dry eye that can occasionally be severe and permanent.
