The honest answer

Turkey is a legitimate place to have eye surgery, and many patients from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia and Scandinavia travel to Istanbul for laser eye surgery, lens replacement and cataract surgery. Three things are true at once:

The operation is the same operation. Laser vision correction, cataract surgery and lens replacement use the same kinds of laser and lens technology worldwide. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) reports that over 95% of laser vision correction patients are satisfied with the outcome, and that permanent, serious loss of vision is rare. That figure describes the procedure, not a country.

Quality varies between surgeons and facilities, in every country. A 2008 German study of 20 patients who needed treatment after refractive surgery abroad, in several countries, traced the problems to four causes: wrong indications (operating on eyes that should not have been operated on), poor handling of complications, no post-operative care and the economics of the trip. None of these belongs to one country, and all of them can be checked before you book.

Distance changes the risk. If a problem appears at home, your surgeon is a flight away. That makes the aftercare plan more important than it would be for a clinic ten minutes from your house.

So the useful question is not “is Turkey good?” but “is this surgeon, in this operating theatre, with this plan, right for my eyes?” The rest of this guide shows how to find out. They are not the only sign of a good surgeon, and many excellent surgeons work outside universities. Our three surgeons can be checked:

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satıcı has been an ophthalmology specialist since 1992, was Professor and Head of Ophthalmology at Harran University and has 21 papers on PubMed.

Doç. A surgeon matched to your eyes. Eye surgery is a set of sub-specialties. Dr. Özer leads cornea, keratoconus, cross-linking, corneal transplant and retina. Op. Dr. Bayram treats cataract, laser and retinal disease. Matching the surgeon to your condition matters more than the size of any clinic.

4. Time for a proper plan. Most patients stay 3–5 days for laser surgery and 5–7 days for lens or cataract surgery, which allows an examination, surgery and check-ups with the same surgeon before you fly.

Which country has the best cataract surgery? <use href="#i-arrow"/>

What can go wrong with eye surgery abroad?

Every operation has risks, wherever it is done. The RCOphth states them plainly for laser vision correction:

Serious, permanent sight loss is rare. Fewer than 1 in 5,000 patients need a corneal transplant to restore vision after laser surgery.

Extra surgery is much more common. Up to 1 in 10 patients need some form of additional surgery to get the best result.

Side effects are normal early on. Dry eye, glare and halos are common in the first weeks and usually settle within a few months.

For cataract surgery, the NHS says the operation is usually successful and serious complications are rare. Possible problems include infection, inflammation, retinal detachment and a lens that sits in the wrong position.

What is different when you travel? Researchers who study “LASIK tourism” describe two things: patients may be less well informed about the risks, and they can lose continuity of professional care. UK official advice adds practical warnings:

Standard travel insurance does not normally cover you if you travelled abroad for elective surgery, and it may not be valid for complications.

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) and the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) do not work in Turkey.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) says it cannot usually help if you travelled abroad for medical treatment.

After surgery abroad, the NHS typically does not cover complications. The RCOphth’s patient checklist says the NHS is unlikely to help unless you have a serious complication that needs emergency or life-saving treatment.

FCDO: its Turkey travel advice records 7 British nationals who died in Turkey in 2025 following medical procedures, and says some others needed further treatment or surgery. It names cosmetic surgery, dental work and cardiac surgery as the most common procedures for medical tourists, and tells you to do your own research because private companies have a financial interest in booking your treatment.

None of this means “do not go”. The UK travel-health service TravelHealthPro adds that you should speak directly with the treating professional, not an administrator or travel agent.

2. In Turkey the route is a national residency programme entered by competitive exam.

3. A surgeon who does not publish can still be excellent, so treat it as one piece of evidence.

4. Ask what share of their work is the operation you need.

5. Ask about their own complications. The RCOphth suggests asking which complications your surgeon has seen most often with your procedure, how often, and what they did to correct them.

6.
