Intermittent blur from dry eyes is common in the first weeks, and a driver who sees well one minute and blurry the next is not ready.

What is the vision standard for driving?

In Great Britain, the DVLA requires car drivers to read a number plate at 20 metres (letters and numbers 79 mm high on plates registered since 1 September 2001) and to have at least 6/12 on the Snellen chart with both eyes open, using glasses or contact lenses if you need them. Other countries and US states set their own limits, so check with your licensing authority. A good surgeon measures your vision at each check-up so you know where you stand.

That test is a minimum, not a comfort rating. The DVLA’s guidance notes that glare can affect a person’s ability to pass the number-plate test, which is why night vision deserves separate attention after laser surgery.

Is night driving harder after laser eye surgery?

Yes, for a while. Glare from oncoming headlights is a common early symptom after laser vision correction, and the RCOphth says night driving may be difficult at first. Halos (rings around lights), starbursts (rays from a light) and ghost images are the other usual symptoms. The NHS says these side effects normally improve within a few months, and the RCOphth says that with modern laser systems they are usually mild and improve within a few months; lasting problems are unusual but can happen.

So the practical advice is:

Do not drive at night until your eyes have recovered. That is the NHS wording, and it matters more than any day count. Choose your first night drive carefully: a short, familiar route, ideally with someone beside you.

Treat dry eyes. The RCOphth explains that blur that comes and goes, and eye surface discomfort, are caused by a less stable tear film between blinks, and that tear supplements help most people stay comfortable while the surface heals. A smoother tear film scatters less light.

Give it time. The FDA says vision may take three to six months to stabilise, and fluctuations in the first months are normal.

Tell your surgeon if night driving is still a problem at 3–6 months. A review is the right moment to look at options.
