The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) adds thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis and the hormonal changes after the menopause, and names medicines that reduce tear production: diuretics, beta-blockers, antihistamines, sleeping pills, antidepressants and heartburn medicines. The NHS also lists smoking, alcohol and air-conditioned or heated rooms.

Blepharitis deserves a mention because it is so common: the AAO says bacteria at the lash base, blocked oil glands or Demodex mites can cause it, that it is especially common with oily skin, dandruff or rosacea, and that it cannot be cured but can be controlled.

Iron deficiency and your eyes <use href="#i-arrow"/>

Why are my eyes burning and watering?

Watery, burning eyes are usually dry eye, an allergy or an infection, and the watering is often a reaction rather than a sign that the eyes are well lubricated. The AAO lists excessive tearing as a symptom of dry eye, because an irritated eye produces extra tears. The NHS agrees: dry eyes can make the eyes produce too many tears.

According to the NHS, watering eyes can also come from:

allergies and infections, including conjunctivitis

irritants, such as smoke, cold or wind

a foreign body, such as an eyelash or grit

blocked tear ducts, the small tubes that drain tears away

eyelid problems, such as a drooping or inward-turning lid

Allergic conjunctivitis is very common: EyeWiki, the AAO’s clinical encyclopedia, reports that up to 40% of people notice allergic eye symptoms at least once in a year.
