The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) describes it as a lens with a single corrective zone that “extends” to cover more than one distance, rather than the several zones of a multifocal lens.

To count as “extended depth of focus”, a lens has to meet a strict clinical test. The AAO’s consensus criteria, summarised on EyeWiki, require a study of at least 100 patients in which the lens gives at least 0.5 dioptres more depth of focus than a monofocal lens, distance vision comparable to a monofocal lens, and good intermediate vision (20/32 or better at 66 cm, arm’s length) in at least half of eyes.

Three ways to extend focus:

Wavefront-shaping (non-diffractive). The lens surface gently stretches and shifts the light so that the focus becomes a band rather than a point. Alcon’s Vivity works this way, using what Alcon calls X-WAVE technology.

Purely refractive. A smooth, continuous change in power across the optic extends the range of focus without diffractive rings. Johnson & Johnson’s TECNIS PureSee is designed this way.

Diffractive “echelette” or small-aperture designs. Older and alternative EDOF lenses use fine diffractive steps (TECNIS Symfony) or a tiny pinhole-like aperture (IC-8 Apthera). Small-aperture designs let in less light, which can make vision harder in dim conditions.

Why “non-diffractive” matters. Multifocal and trifocal lenses split incoming light between distance, middle and near foci. That gives better reading vision, but the out-of-focus images can show up as rings or halos around lights at night. Non-diffractive EDOF lenses keep all the light in one stretched focus, so their pattern of night-time halos and glare is designed to be closer to that of a monofocal lens.

Technology we use: {{EDOF lens models actually offered, e.g. Vivity / Vivity Toric, PureSee / PureSee Toric}}, implanted in a fully equipped, Ministry of Health–licensed operating theatre in Istanbul. The Vivity lens also lowers contrast in dim light compared with a monofocal lens.
